Your view of JIT help accords with my own; however, I am wondering if the scope of JIT help has expanded somewhat in the last couple of years. For example, MS Word 2003 help is quite different from that of previous versions. It - is docked to the app
- makes use of a search field, which is placed on the UI rather than in the help
- sends users to a web site for the most up-to-date information
- and, I believe, uses "help objects," which are instantiated at run time

Together, these points describe--I think--Longhorn user assistance. But the last point is the one that best describes JIT. Does anyone know anything about creating help this way?

Also, does JIT help include "knowing about the user"? What I mean here is this: let's say you have two groups of users, one has xyz permissions and the other has abc permissions. When one set clicks help, users see only the help that matches their permission set; when users in the other group click help, they see only the help that matches their permission set. Is this possible to do? Is it worth the effort?

Thanks,
L.

Context sensitive meaning that the help contents reflect the place on
the GUI where the user accessed the help. Thus, the information was
'just in time', as in 'I need to know stuff about this dialog now; click
help'.
