What Yourdon is talking about is that systems are what
is referred to as asynchronous: Many things
potentially happening a the same time and many

linear, one thing after another.

Using a synchronous (i.e., one dimensional) tool to
try and describe an asynchronous (i.e.
multidimensional) entity causes problems. The bigger
the system, the bigger the problems.

That assertion is absurd on the face of it, Tony. There is a one-to-one mapping between your asynchronous, multiple-degrees-of-freedom, n-dimensional system and the linear code that defines it; and there is similarly a one-to-one mapping between the system and a suitable text description. I'll grant you that deciding how to effect that mapping can be a challenge for people who have trouble getting out of Flatland, but that's why Flatlanders don't get the big bucks. If organizing text in a way that suitably reflects the nature of the system is causing problems for someone, then I suggest that the someone in question needs to develop critical thinking abilities--whether by learning how to create DFDs or by some other means.
