DAT will give you about 2 hours of recording with excellent recording quality.
However, the recorders are somewhat expensive. A lot of people use them for
live recording and you can usually find used models on EBay.

I bought my
wife an IRiver flash-based MP3 player with voice recording capability for
recording lectures. It has a line-in input for an external microphone, but
so far she hasn't needed one. The advantage of one of these is long recording
times and battery life. She has a 256 MB player, but you can get them in 512
MB and 1 GB capacities, and it will double as a music player (and a flash
drive with their latest firmware). You can transfer recordings to your PC
as MP3 files. I want one myself - it'd be really handy for recording technical
sessions or interviews with SMEs.

Keith
