I'm also a Sr. Tech Writer and have experienced both - announced and unannounced - big and small writing/grammar exercises like the ones you described, and I wasn't surprised in either case. I was interviewing for a writing position, so why not test me in some depth. It never hurts to do one of these when interviewing for a writing position. Sure, they're not 'rocket science' type tests, but it could help you stumble across some interesting results that might influence your hiring decision.

If anything, make it known to the candidate before the interview that a short writing exercise will be given during the interview. This way, you're giving him/her a mental heads-up but not the exact items in the test.

Good luck in your endeavor!

Mary Jo
