A while back I was being interviewed by a cross-functional team. I
explained that I knew how to work with developers, read code, write
developer-oriented docs, SDLC docs, and also write end-user manuals and
online help. One of the managers commented spontaneously "Gee, I've
never worked with a really good tech writer before!!"

Now I'm not saying this as self-promotion - I'm sure a lot of you
reading this have similar qualifications to mine. But this was a large
well-funded company with extensive HR recruiting and screening
processes, and internal training and job development tracks, and STILL
they hadn't seen a good tech writer before (where *were* all you
guys?).

I also happened to know that before they hauled me in, they had
attempted to fill the spot via a national service better-known for
secretarial temps at a MUCH lower rate, and got nobody qualified. So
for me, that exchange further confirms there is something seriously
broken about the way tech writers are selected and managed.
