I create virtually all my diagrams using 3D modeling software (3D Studio
Max and previously Truespace). Though not always necessary, i.e.:
www.techexams.net/technotes/ccna/osimodel.shtml
it does look good, and in the IT certification industry it is quite
innovative (at least when I started doing it 5 years ago ;)).

Even if I use Photoshop, I model the elements in 3D first, this one for
example:

I am currently working on a large diagram, for which I will use the 3D
perspective to my advantage. I.o.w. being able to put more into a
smaller image:

I'm not sure if it is allowed, but I can suggest several good 3D
products, that are quite easy to learn for a 'beginner'.
