Yes, this is what I thought of doing at first. But there are potentially
five different file formats of each image. They will all look the same but
be used for different output. So I need only one thumbnail, but up to five
different links for each thumbnail.

I've chosen the link-to-ftp approach so we can keep the total website file
size small. I've been led to believe that there are space issues on the
website server that we don't have with the other ftp server -- but that's a
different kettle of fish entirely.
