The rationale for this decision is that we are not obliged to follow the peculiarities, or parrot the mistakes, of the UI


Out of curiosity, what releases your group from these obligations?
You might attack the problem from the other direction by making a number of well-considered suggestions for changes to the UI. Or at least file some bug reports. Cowboying it on your own is uncooperative at best, and at worst is slightly hostile.
If you are worried about it, you might consider going over the heads of those who outvoted you.
