Somebody offline suggested layer or tier.

I almost like this. We layer model is familiar to some around here.
However, a question...does this terem imply a relationship between
each of them?

Does a Database layer imply that it might be modified by another
layer above or below it? Does it also imply a hierarchy structure
between the layers? In my case, there is no defined relationship
between them and there isn't a hierarchy structure.
