Use of styles is a bit problematic to me - for a short doc I may well
not bother. However, for a resume that I keep up to date (and which has
changed/grown over 20 years) I now have specific styles for the headings
I use. Having said that it doesn't matter that much as I usually send
PDFs after having the Word version screwed up by recruiters more than
once :-(

It should be typo free - if we can't do that on a 2/3 page doc then
we're in trouble. I know it's easy to make mistakes - that's why we
proof them!

As to how they read, I (sometimes) provide an alternative to my resume.
Standard covering letter (why pick me etc!) introduces resume and also
offers an alternative 'career history'. Basically, resume is in the
'standard' tabular layout that we all know. The 'History' is the same
information written as longhand prose, offering a more flowing example
of my writing. It also allows the introduction of a little more detail
(tools on jobs, length etc) that would bloat the resume.

Never had any complaints about this approach - covering letter always
states it's there as an 'example'. Of course it may never get read :-)
