We provide technical reports to the Government as part of our contract.

I had been given to understand (in the five years I've been doing my
job) that widely-understood industry terms were not defined on first
mention (partly because our SMEs have a hard time remembering what a
lot of the initialisms stand for!).

Here's the terms our government contact says need to be spelled out:
LAN
WAN
SMTP
DNS
DHCP
URL
SAS
PVCS
SAN
HOD

We maintain a list of about 175 terms with accepted industry terms or
company names with unusual spellings (e.g. GroupWise, PerfMan,
Connect:Direct). What's the usual practice where you are? (And if
you'd like to give me cites I can bring into the meeting later on
today, that would be great, too.)
