Joe, 

The open document formats are based upon the OpenOffice.org formats
with appropriate modifications to cover a few more cases.

OpenOffice.org, KOffice, and other open source office apps have
announced support, and the OpenOffice.org 2.0 beta already uses them.

It remains to be seen if and when the proprietary apps will begin support.
