The underlying tech is SQL, the UI is a hodgepodge of
different open source stuff. I have seen a number of other
tools that perform similar functions, but all of them were
proprietary enterprise stuff and very, very expensive. This
is the first one I've seen that is readily consumer-available,
and it has the potential to be quite huge.
However...

Yahoo recently got around to actually announcing that they
were going to buy flickr (there were at least three or four
people left in Silicon Valley who didn't know yet). It'll be very interesting to see if they end up doing the same thing to it that AOL ended up doing to Netscape...
