I don't think that parking spot is an optional space. It's for those instances where you inconveniently ordered something that McD's couldn't give you quickly, so they're going to "park" you while they continue waiting on everyone behind you. You'll get your order whenever they darned well feel like bringing it out to you.

Spoken by someone who worked at McD's for about 4 years back when I was in high school and college.
