We use "dialog" in our online help, written for an audience of developers, and have done so for years. It's the way developers speak and it breaks no natural rules of the language. I can understand the longer, more explanatory form ("dialog box") in documentation for end users, but it doesn't make sense to us for our product, with our audience.

I've just checked a competitor's product, which I happen to have on my machine, and their online help also uses the short form.

The Microsoft Manual of Style for Technical Publications has always

Hi all-

Can anyone point me to a somewhat authoritative source for using "dialog"
rather than "dialog box" (as advocated by Microsoft)? We've been using the
former for years but now our CEO has questioned whether dialog is actually
an industry standard.

(An admittedly quick scan of the archives didn't turn up any relevant
responses.)
