I found that I had really hit my stride some time ago. In some
respects, that has lessened my willingness to _fight the good fight_,
and being older, more cynical, and more diverse in my interests, I
find that it is growing easier (except for an episode this past
spring) to simple accept that things are the way they are.
I think that corporations, rather than companies, prefer folks like
me, because we get the job done, without that hunger for innovation
and invention.
Companies used to love me, when I was hungry and ambitious.
On my annual appraisal, I am asked to list my goals and objectives for
the coming year and five years. I don't list any, I write that I plan
to write manuals as required. My goals and objectives do not serve the
corporation, and are none of the corporation's business.
When I worked in companies, I had dreams that intertwined and affected my job.
For the purpose of this discussion, my differentiating between
corporations and companies is merely a function of size. Until I
worked in the US, I worked at small companies (although some were
incorporated), where everyone knew my name. Here, my appraisals are
assessed by men that I would not recognize in the hallways of work,
let alone at the grocery store.
