I would dispute that. Although it may seem from the messages on
this and other forums that 90% of the world's tech writers are in the
software and IT fields, there's a world of stuff out there requiring
documentation that isn't, though it's true that most medical or biotech writing will require at least a passing knowledge of various IT and SW operations to prepare things like 21CFR11 and other validation protocols. For the background you've described, try checking
the career sections of sites for companies like Affymetrix, BD Bio,
Genentech, etc., or consider some additional training to prep yourself for medical writing (start at amwa.org, the home of the American Medical Writers Association).

While being a technical writer superficially seems a natural segue,
