We thought of creating a wiki where users can post
their comments, ideas, etc.

Has anyone ever done this? If so, has it been
successful? easy to maintain?

John Malin's helpful comments are pretty much on the mark. Some wiki engines enable quite sophisticated access methods, so you could have levels of editing access. I have installed and run a number of "dual-mode" wikis with password access for editors and non-editing view-only mode for visitors. You can easily pick a wiki engine that suits your needs for both security and ease of use. I like the engine from UseMod at http://www.usemod.com because it's a single-file installation (external config file option, if you wish) and very easy to tailor to your needs. See it in action at http://twpats.hytext.com - "Techwriting Patterns Wiki". I accidentally wrote a standalone, personal wiki engine and integrated viewer for documentation, help file writing, PIM and personal textbase activities that might work as an intro to the wiki way for you.
