It may be too late to help Elizabeth, but I use Insert/Object, Create from
File, and then Browse to the Visio file. (I have seen it not work on
machines that didn't have Visio installed.) I can use Visio to edit the
document within Word.

Admittedly, I have never tried it with a "mix of text, jpgs of our products,
and Visio shapes". So, no guarantees are explicit or implied.
