My simple text file/perl script system started to really break down
once I had multiple clients, and clients with multiple projects who
wanted me to account for thems seperately.
These days I use a program called iBiz on the Mac that lets me keep
track of clients, projects, and tasks within projects all
independently of each other. It does all the basic time tracking
stuff. It keeps track of time remaining on projects so I don't go
over my estimates. And its best feature is that it'll generate custom
invoices with a single button -- I just hate invoicing so this was a
really nice feature.
The program has a lot of quirks and UI issues, its definitely not
perfect, but its made me much more efficient in my accounting.
When I'm away from my mac -- onsite, etc -- I use a Palm program
called Punch Clock which is just that. Set up different clocks for
different projects and then punch in and out as needed. It totals up
the time for each project and summarizes for day, week, time period.
