I find that interesting. My husband was interviewing for a brief while after his layoff and all the recruiters he's worked with have told him that he must have two professional references and these two professional references cannot be from volunteer or other jobs, they must be from paying work in the same field that he's applying for a job in. So, two professional references and one non-professional.

He's screwed. He's 31. Two companys have gone bankrupt, his last job, where he was for four years, refused to give him a reference b/c it's completely against company policy, and while he hasn't asked Sanjiv [name changed to protect identity] over in India, who took his job, he figures Sanjiv won't be allowed to give him a reference either, even though he basically trained him in. His last resort was a job he held when he was in college from 19-22, but the IT Manager who is now the CTO said that it was too long ago.

So he's fixing computers and building up some references on the side. They won't be "precisely" what the recruiter wants, but it's better than only volunteer work references.

Other than that, I would suggest volunteer and off-the-job references that could
attest to professional characteristics such as making deadlines, etc.
