Ah Ha! A case for complex numbering. ;)

Number and organise your parts figures in the correct hierarchy.

1 Assembly Installation
1 Assembly1
1.1 Subassembly1
1.1.1 Sub-Subassembly1
1.2 Subassembly2
1.3 Subassembly3
1.4 Subassembly4

Even better when the figures are arranged in a hierarchy that gives
installation then assembly drawings. Separating installation parts from
repair and overhaul parts.

Then the parts list should be similarly structured. The assembly level can
simply be in a column, or the description can be indented to represent the
level. Or both.

Best parts catalogue I've seen had the parts list as part followed by
attaching parts/hardware. Not the usual jumble of numbering all identical
parts with the same callout and having only one entry in the list.

Then, by all means include an alphanumerical parts index based on the
description and the same based on the part number.
