Has anyone discovered an effective way to hunt for telecommuting jobs online, contract or otherwise?

Jefro,

The gist of several threads on this topic is that telecommuting is something that a progressive manager _may_ award to a loyal, proven, long-term employee, if the stars are properly aligned; but that you shouldn't expect it to be for more than a couple days a week at first.

In other words, it is painfully difficult to find a company with the vision to understand that telecommuting is a viable working relationship for a new hire. I'm not saying there are none; I'm just saying that the common complaint is that they're hard to find under the best of circumstances.

However, lots of companies are willing to outsource to an independent consultant, on a project-by-project basis. And some projects, as I'm sure you know, can be multi-year affairs. So you may want to reposition yourself that way. I did that almost a year ago. At first it was slow, and unemployment insurance was the bulk of my income. But I'm off the dole now and business is picking up quite nicely. This year's gross may be down a bit (or may not be), but at the rate I'm going I'll make more in 2006 than I ever made as a (pretty well paid) captive. And except for the occasional courtesy visit to local businesses, I never even meet my clients.
