Everyone has heard the line "A camel is a horse designed by
committee".

That's the case with comparing commercial software with OS software.

Follow me on this, I'll be switching between metaphors pretty freely.

In the case of commercial software, it is the camel. Lots of
features, bloat, bugs, etc. However, each camel is similar..not from
the perspective of features, but from the perspective of
implementation, interface, approach, etc. There are only two or three
variations of camels. Sure, camels have bad tempers, they spit,
they're stubborn and ornery. However, once you know how to ride a
camel, they're all pretty much the same.

OS produces horses. Single purpose, sleek, high performance, etc.
However, there are lots of types of horses, all determined by the
author; racehorses, quarter horses, ponies, Arabians, etc., and they
are different. Some are mild mannered, some not.

Whereas windows users are camel jockeys and camel jockeys can ride
any camel, OS users are cowboys. The need to know how to ride
different types of horses, each with different requirements.
