Here's a nice selection of advertising portfolios:

ios.htm
These are for bulk buyers, but will give you an idea
of what to look for at the local Office Depot.
I like the zippered leather one with pockets.

As for volunteer work, try any non-profit org. They all
have processes and procedures just like corporations,
state & federal government agencies, etc., and it may
work into a paying position.

Take any job you can get at a "target" company that you
want to work for and you will find it easier to move
into the job you want from the inside. Just pick a
company that you know has tech writers on staff and
take any job you can get. You find out which companies
have tech writers by searching job boards for "experienced
technical writer."

Search all the job sites for entry level writing jobs
in any field. "entry writer -auto" at careerbuilder.com
just got 187 jobs listed. The -auto is so you're not
writing up brake job tickets at Meineke.

Expect to move around the country for your first few
jobs. As you gain experience, you can be choosier.

Best of luck!
Rick
