I've never heard of head phones being unacceptable, so I wouldn't worry
about being allowed. I wouldn't even think of asking permission. Why
would anyone care, unless they're so perfect you can't hear your boss
asking you a question.
In my noisiest positions, surrounded by sales or customer service, I
wear them most of the time. In cube-land, it's almost unavoidable.
Sometimes, though, I am so deeply involved in what I'm doing, I hardly
hear the chatter.
