Thanks everyone for your replies to my educational background question. It
just proves what I actually told him, that technical writers come from all
sorts of backgrounds! I think he has a great heads up no matter what he
decides to major in, as he gaining valuable on-the-job experience.

I was lucky that way myself. After getting my BA in Scientific and
Technical Communications, I went to grad school at University of Toronto
and received my MA in the History and Philosophy of Science and
Technology. While there I worked as an editorial assistant on a
textbook..when I graduated in one insane year...I had a Masters and a year
of experience...and as much as I loved my Masters work...I think it was
the year of experience that landed me my first job.

Thanks again for all the replies!

Melissa
