This has been covered several times in recent history on the list.
Suggestion: don't reinvent the wheel. Go with a published/well-known
style guide.

I really like Read Me First - A Style Guide for the Computer Industry
from SUN.

Many people also like and use the Microsoft Manual of Style, although we
did find several places in the MMoS where it contradicted itself. :-)
