That could land you in trouble, because then the issue is passed down
the pipe, and when issues travel down the pipe, they tend to gain
baggage and increase in velocity. And given the downward motion, it's
very possible it'll land back on you (while first collecting baggage
from your already unpleasant boss). Not good.

Escalation happens one stage at a time in an upward motion. If you lob
directly into the lap of an executive, their reaction will be "Why do
I have to deal with this? I employ people to take care of this!" The
executive will then lob to one of their direct reports with a "sort
this mess out, how did this get so bad that it came right to me?"
message attached, and thus the baggage collection descent begins.
