On a recent visit to the Washington, D. C. area I met an old friend who
was a technical writer for 10 years. She lost her job two years ago and
reluctantly took a job as a patent secretary. She started at 60K. Today
she is earning 80K. She claims the work is much easier than technical
writing. She even mentioned that some top patent secretaries don't even
have college degrees.

So, if I every move back to DC.........
