I recall in the 80's traveling from NJ to CA for interviews set up
for me by recruiters in places like Texas and Chicago. The only
thing that seems new is that it's spread from "permanent" hiring
to contractors. But I suspect that it all stems from pretty much
the same origin: recruiters who move around from agency to
agency and location to location, carrying their contact lists in
companies with them as they move.

I have been seeing interesting local contracts announced by recruiters from
anywhere but local. This seems to be getting more typical, where a recruiter
in Michigan or Florida or California contacts me about work 20 miles from my
door in Washington. What seems really odd is that they often do this a week
or more before any local recruiter has the job listed.
