Sorry if chiming in late. Any good historical linguistics book will include:

* An overview of how language changes, including phonemic, morphemic, grammatical, syntactic, and semantic (yes, language does change in all of these areas and in a "predictable," systematic way)
* A survey of language families and how they have spread
* How new languages form and how existing languages go extinct
* In-depth analysis of several languages and how they change from one geographical location to another and through time
* References for additional information

Just do a search and pick one that sounds interesting. You'll always want to take a look at Stephen Pinker. He'll hit you with a smattering of linguistics and change your view on language, prescriptive grammar, how the brain works, and the nature/nurture "debate."
