You shouldn't go by what we think the name means. You should go by what the
company wants done. Companies don't always get nomenclature right. Job
profiles are also often rather loosely defined.

You should be asking them to flesh out the responsibilities for that role.
Some points of interest:
- Who do you report to.
- What do they expect you to accomplish in the first 3/6 months?
- What do they expect you to accomplish in the long term?
- Define long term.
- How much autonomy does the role enjoy?
- What is the growth path for that role (at least the next level)
- What are the opportunities for lateral movement?

If they can answer that, you'll get a pretty good picture of where you fit
in. If they don't, you can probably define your own profile. Then come back
and talk to us.

Hi all,
I have the interesting opportunity to take on the role of "Documentation
Architect" (or, as my company calls it...Staff Technical Writer). I'm trying
to figure out just what this job should/could be. There is a job
description, but it's kind of vague.
So, just out of curiousity, if you were appointed your group's
"Documentation Architect," how would you define this job...or what would YOU
do if you had such an exalted (or pretentious?) title?
Thanks for your thoughts,
Joan Goldstein
