1. Rectangular manhole covers are rectangular for several reasons:
- to distinguish underground electrical / utility conduits from sewer
- to meet street planners "cubist" themed design approach
- to give bored teens in the town a chance for causing mischief
- to make passers-by say, "Hey--that's a rectangular manhole cover!"

2. The International Society of Sewer and Underground Utility Personnel
(ISSUUP) has recommended that "manholes" be renamed "Underground Wet/Dry
Conduit Maintenance Access Vertical Passages" (UWDCMAVPs), and "manhole
covers should be "Underground Wet/Dry Conduit Maintenance Access
Vertical Passage Security Lids" (UWDCMAVPSLs).

It just rolls off the tongue so much easier than "manhole," doesn't it?
