The two examples you describe are not "problems," they are features of Word.

When you do a straight copy-and-paste from one document to another, Word
gets confused. It doesn't know which format you want. Here are some quick

For the list numbering problem, highlight the list, right-click, and choose
"Restart numbering."

For the style problem, two solutions:

1. Never copy-and-paste directly from one Word document to another.
Use Notepad for an "intermediary." This will strip the old style away so
that you can add the new style.

2. "Paste special > Unformatted text" into your new document.
