Thank you for the input on the image issue. I always learn from this list.
I did save as html and the separation of graphics worked well, but I still can't edit the images in Illustrator. It's just what we use here - referenced art in Illustrator. (I don't know if the original files are available anywhere - updating an old manual. That's my next step.)

Again, thank you all for sharing, especially the roach motel analogy!
