As someone who worked selling car parts and has donated a fair share of 
blood and skin to remote parts of car engine bays and other tight spots, 
I'd have to say the "standard" to beat or match would be the Haynes repair 
manuals.

Granted my last couple of purchases of these manuals simply led me to the 
conclusion that I didn't mind paying a mechanic for the trouble. But, they 
helped me rebuild and keep an Austin Mini running and to rebuild an old 
K-car.
