Regarding laptops on airplanes, there are a few alternatives.

0. Don't go. Find some other way to get it done remotely.

1. Offer to stow your batteries in checked luggage, or ask that they be handled by the carrier. If the airline provides power outlets, ask if you can retain your power adapter to watch movies on the plane.

2. Remove the hard drive and check the rest, with the appropriate signed assurances from the handlers.

3. Ship the computer to yourself at your destination with lots of packing peanuts.

4. Put the important bits on a thumb drive and borrow or rent a machine when you arrive.

5. Use something like a Treo while traveling. Airlines see these as phones, not computers.

6. My favorite option---fly yourself. (I'm a private pilot, so perhaps my vision is skewed.) A
logical alternative to this is to drive yourself, take a train, etc. Make a roadtrip out of it and
bring the family, and don't forget to file an expense report for the hotel bills.
