At a software startup where I worked, there was a series of layoffs as the financial condition of the company deteriorated. In every round, the oldest one or two people were let go, and the mean age of the people let go was slightly higher than the mean age of the people retained. The company was careful to keep the difference small, so they could attribute it to the small sample size; but the trend was clear. When I was the oldest, it was bye-bye, Dick.
