Hello,
I am new to the technical writing field and am interested in finding a job as a telecommuter. I have been told by my peers that this list was a great way to ask questions about the field. I would appreciate any feedback from those of you who have experience as a telecommuter. Where do I begin?

Jessica,

There have been many posts on this list about getting that great telecommuting job, and as far as I know nobody has ever figured out a way to start at a company as a telecommuter. Excuse me, I think maybe grizzled veteran John Garison actually did begin his last position that way (or maybe I'm misremembering), but then they let him go and now he's freelancing from home just as I am. In any event, nobody has ever been able to do it as a new practitioner seeking their first job.

So the short answer to the question of how you get a telecommuting job is to start by getting a full-time in-office job, prove your worth to the company, and then gradually wean them from their dependence on your physical presence (work from home one day a week, then two, etc.). You are still going to have to show up at the office from time to time, so they remember your face and what you do the next time they have a staff cutback; even so, you'll probably be on the short list. So keep that résumé polished and hang onto you nice interview suit.

After you have a few years in the saddle and you feel you have enough skills and enough contacts to strike out on your own, you can run your business from home. The hours will be longer, of course, and the income will be less secure, but at least you'll be able to say you're your own boss.

Probably not what you wanted to hear, huh?
