Why is Microsoft permitted to put out this crap decade after decade?
Bill, you're needed back at the office (assuming you give a damn).

Microsoft Word became a standard because it has gotten progressively
better at supporting non-technical users in performing essentially
simple tasks.

This is a nice way of saying that a trained chimp who had just
acquired rudimentary language skills and slightly improved fine motor
control could sit down in front of a PC running a recent version of
Word and bang out a document that looked halfway decent; it supports
that mode of operation very well, and has become dominant, at least in
part, as a result.

Word is *not* very good at supporting professional writers who know
how to use computers and who need to generate long, complex documents,
especially people who do serious writing in academic, technical, or
scientific fields.

The frustrating thing is that Word's *feature set* would lead you to
believe that it does thiss stuff well... but it doesn't.

Word's working as designed, though. It is both "crap" from the
perspective of a professional writer and The Standard from the
perspective of almost the entire business world. Most of us are stuck
with it to one extent or another.
