With regard to the email harvesting, it appears that, as Kat said,
it was at least partially manual.
As I've said before, we don't provide/sell/lease/whatever the addresses
to anyone for anything. That said, as Carla pointed out, it's possible
for email addresses to be extracted from archives or the Usenet mirror
through a number of different methods. Unfortunately, short of not
having archives, there's little to do about that. (Yes, it would
be possible to strip all email addresses from the messages in the
archives, but I find that a lot of the value of the comments is
directly connected to who the comments come from.)
