I did give a writing (on a computer) test.
We asked people to document some basic actions using Microsoft Outlook, presuming that most people are familiar with an email program,
This would basically show whether people knew how to document things and knew how to run the spell checker!
But we told them in advance that there would be a small test, because people have to plan for how long they will be in an interview.

If you did that to me, the "ooky" face wasn't that I don't handle
surprises well, but me thinking "Damn...I thought this was going to
be a good gig, but who knows what other kind of stunts these guys are
going to pull once I'm here...too bad the inerview is over."

OTOH, when we first make arrangements for the interview, tell me that
there will be a writing test involved and I'll make sure I bring the
paper and sharpened pencils.
