I take it the word 'photocopy' somehow never caught on on the other side
of the Atlantic?

Photocopy technology was largely replaced by photostatic ("stat" in the trade) technology long before the Haloid Xerox Company made the latter obsolete when they introduced xerography (originally xerigraphy, by the way). Once in a while, on this side of the pond, we actually call things by the right term (not often, I realize). When was the last time you sawa an actual photocopy, other than in courtroom dramas from the 1930s?
