I think there are four possible ways to handle off-topic
material on this list:

1. Post it, but preface the subject line with "OT: ".
2. Reply privately.
3. Write but do not send an OT reply or post (Zen reply).
4. Post the material or the reply to the list.

Personally I aim for 3, often use 2, sometimes do 4,
and occasionally regret not having used 1.
