I use MS MoS as a basic template, but I tend to agree with Beth about
user expertise. The old Robohelp system I built was meant to provide
assistance for users who had been using AS400 or Unix for years, and had
to be walked through the new environment. Our new hires are expected to
have working knowledge of Windows, and it should be obvious what to
specifically do if I instruct them to "Select Options, then Memo. Type
your message and click Post." Or something like that.

As far as authoritative style guides are concerned, I suffered through
the MLA style guide eds 3-7 (or whatever is the most recent) during my
meandering undergraduate path and my rather quick and straightforward
graduate path. I rejoice knowing I need never write another paper in
MLA format, and as sole technical writer here, I am master of my domain,
and can adapt my style as necessary and allow it to evolve.

Of course, there are times I find myself writing "appear" or "click on,"
so despite my personal guidelines, I still occasionally break them,
especially when I'm low on caffeine or type while I'm staring out the
window at the train station.
