No disagreement here. You're right.

If people on the list are happy with that, then that's fine. But
here's why I think you should care. According to the TECH-WRL website,
"The TECHWR-L discussion list has more than 5,000 direct subscribers and
an estimated daily readership of more than 10,000 people worldwide." But
only a fraction of you post. The rest of us, like me, are your audience.
We come here to learn about technical communication, find ways that we
can better do our jobs, perhaps learn about the field so we can decide
whether this is a career we want to pursue. And speaking on behalf of
the lurkers, we are not socially inept, and we do feel the need to blow
off steam and talk about things other than COBOL every now and then. My
point is I don't think TECH-WRL is the appropriate place for some of the
discussions we are seeing. There are plenty of other outlets besides
this one single list.

Gary, I see that as a nonsequitur. I post, usually but not always, in an
effort to clarify something for someone else, to help someone solve a
technical problem, etc. Sometimes I post just to join in the fun, but I
do try to restrict that to Fridays. However, there is no gain to me
personally, other than in having done a mitzvah, if someone else
benefits from my post and there is no loss to me personally if nobody is
around to benefit from it. I don't get paid for posting; so I can't get
paid less because I have fewer readers, can I?

So my question to you is this, what ever happened to Friday Fun?
There used to be an appropriate time and place for this sort of thing,
but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

I have no argument with you there.
