Hi all:
Has your start date for a contract assignment ever been delayed, and you felt funny about it? Such just happened to me; my start date was just delayed from mid Dec to Jan 2.

Thrice... two times it was for a contracting position with one of the world's largest computer companies. In each case, the problem was not with the people I interviewed or would be working with. It was with their bureaucracy. In both cases, the one year contract started late and was canceled within three months. (I was not alone...once 6,000 contractors nationwide were cut, the other time it was regional with 400 of us cut.) The company them reported a significant increase in their bottom line just before year end financials.

I learned several lessons: if you get a contract with a large international, start looking immediately for something to fall back on, and if they guarantee you a year, figure you have a good quarter at the most.

The only other time it happened was with a smaller company. My would be manager had to take an emergency leave and they asked me if I could delay my start date for two weeks until he got back. I did and ended up being offered a permanent position.
