In ~8 years of freelancing I never saw clauses like the ones you
mention, but one client asked me to sign a standard contract that they
had used for many years (so they told me), then expressed surprise that
I wanted to read the contract before signing, because "everyone just
accepts the standard conditions".

Imagine the surprise all round when I pointed out to them that one of
these conditions stated that the contract was null and void if *neither*
the client nor the contractor declared bankruptcy during the contract
term.
