Hi Susan,

One possibility is that some italics are defined the right way (using a
character style) while others are defined the wrong way (using manual
formatting).

The correct solution happens to be the easiest: Do a Find-and-Replace,
where you find all manually formatted italics and replace them with a
character style. You can safely click Replace All in this particular
situation.
